Vaka akaraanga
Vaka akaraanga. Model canoe. Small scale model of a double hull canoe. Composite materials used in construction. Hulls carved from ano wood, timber for planking carved from tamanu (mahogany). Lashed and caulked together securely. Tear drop and diamond shaped inlay of parau (pearl shell) spanning the length of the sides of each hull. Lashing made from fine kaa puru akari (coconut sennit). Rauara (pandanus) panels border the top sides, also lashed to the hulls. Upper sides of the hull constructed from pandanus with red fibre borders, possibly dyed apuraka (giant swamp taro epidermis). Faded red tassle fibre akaviriviri (decorative element) at both ends of each hull. Various wooden pole attachments including a tu oe (standing rudder). Has additional components, separate. Two whole parau (pearl) shells with serrated edges shaped with intention to be the model sails. The two hulls lashed together and connected by three horizontal kiato (wooden strats).
