Pouvai

human history

Pouvai. Baton club. This is a carved pouvai made of toa (ironwood). This pouvai is a dark brown colour with a smooth polished surface. The base of the handle is flat with a triangular protrusion carved from it. The tip of the protrusion is stained with light blue paint. The protrusion has also been drilled with a small suspension hole and threaded with brown twine. Attached to the twine is a brown swing tag label. The handle flares slightly to a wider blade that is also cylindrical in shape and resembles a baseball bat. The tip of blade is domed. The entire pouvai is adorned in bands of mamanu (Samoan decorative motifs). The bands begin at the handle and move up the pouvai with five in total. The mamanu are made of triangular incisions that have then been filled with white powder for decorative purposes. Embedded near the base of the handle and at the tip of the blade is a single eye bolt. This may have been used to hang the pouvai for display purposes. The pouvai is a type of 'au'upega (weapon of war) used in close combat during times of war.
