Hoe
human history
Hoe. Carved ceremonial paddle. This hoe (paddle) is carved from ra'au (hardwood) into a leaf-shaped blade with a long slender to'o (shaft), round in section, that flares toward the butt. The butt is carved into a flat rectangular shape with eight stylised ti'i (ancestral human figures) carved across its four sides. The hoe is carved in fine geometric patterns arranged in bands over all the surface of the wood. The hoe is dark brown in colour with glossy patina.
