Mama laumei

human history

Mama laumei. Ring of turtle shell. This is a handmade mama laumei. The band of the mama (ring) is made from a piece of pakua laumei (turtle shell). The pakua laumei has been heated and wrapped to create a cylindrical shape. The band is not joint in a circle but the ends instead overlap each other to make the mama. The mama laumei is decorated with two rows of silver inlay shaped like flowers and diamonds. In between the decorative rows is the word SAMOA also made of silver. A mama laumei such as this is likely to have been created for the tourist market as a collectible item.
