Paopao model

human history

Paopao model. Canoe model. This is a hand made model of a paopao. This model is made of two types of wood held together by 'afa (sennit). The liu (hull) is made of a dark brown wood and has a smooth unpolished surface. Along the top edge of the liu runs a border made of mamanu (Samoan decorative motifs). These mamanu are made of triangular indents. Small holes have been drilled to allow for the 'iato (booms) to be fafau (lashed) to the liu. The two rectangular 'iato are made of a light coloured wood and are tightly secured to the liu using 'afa (sennit). One of the 'iato have been snapped and only measures the width of the liu. The other 'iato is still intact with tu'itu'i (pegs) lashed to the other end. The tu'itu'i would normally fit into holes made in the ama (outrigger). The ama is made of the same lighter wood as the 'iato but is no longer attached to the paopao. The ama is shaped like a thin rectangle also however one end is straight and the other is pointed. This paopao is a model of the type of outrigger canoe used in Samoa for fishing expeditions done closer to land. The absence of the ufi taumua and ufi taumuli (bow and stern covers) and the pu'oso(storage cavity) from the paopao mean that it would not have been an ideal vessel for deep-sea fishing expeditions and inter-island commuting.
