    Tapa beater (English)

  • Description

    Ike. Bark cloth beater. Used for pounding and producing sheets of masi (bark cloth). Carved from solid kau (wood). Long and square in cross section with a tapered handle. Four-sided, with three sides with grooves spaced approximately 2mm-4mm apart. The vertical grooves along the length of the ike alter to horizontal lines near base (top of handle). One side is plain without grooves. Brown in colour.
