'Ato tui

human history

'Ato tui. Coiled basket. This is a handwoven 'ato (basket). It has been woven to form an oval bowl-like shape with short sides and a wide diameter. Tuāniu (midribs) form the skeleton of the 'ato. Lau fala (soft pandanus material) and fau (lace bark) has been used to tui kolose (crochet/coil) over the tuāniu forming the material of the 'ato. The centre shows where the maker has begun and continued to form the 'ato. The rim curves inwards framing the opening. A single 'au (handle) has been attached to the sides of the rim. Lau paogo (coarse pandanus material) makes up the spine of the 'au which has then been encased with a plain lalaga (weave) of lau fala and fau. The entire 'ato has been made with naturally coloured lau fala and green dyed fau.
