Te ili
Ili. Fan. This is an ili made of tuaaniu (coconut midrib), laukie (pandanus), kaumoe (immature coconut leaf) and fulu kaleva (kaleva feathers). Tuaaniu are braided to form the spine of the blade as well as the handle. The handle is then encased in lalaga (woven) laukie. A black laukie and a beige laukie are lalaga to form a checkerboard design along the handle. The blade is circular in shape and is made of tightly lashed tuaaniu. Thin strips of kaumoe is used to lash the tuaaniu together. Laukie his used to lalaga a zigzag motif around the blade. This technique is also called faka sigano. One side of the blade is decorated with black laukie, while the other side uses blue laukie. The ili is also adorned with two rows of fulu kaleva. As in many parts of the Pacific, ili were used to keep cool in the hot weather and often presented as gifts to visitors.
