'Aupolapola

human history

'Aupolapola. Coconut leaf carrying sheet. This has been handwoven from lau niu (coconut leaf). It has been woven to carry such items like cooked pua'a (pigs). This would only be used for mea'ai (food). The size can vary depending on the size of the pua'a. The process of making 'aupolapola begins with an entire lau niu. You would then begin lalaga (weaving) the leaves together from the midrib, closings the ends off. This can be seen by the braid down the centre of the base. Once closed off you would split the tuāniu (midrib) through the middle. This can bee seen by the fibrous edges of the 'aupolapola. This can also be used for carrying i'a (fish).
