'Uatogi

human history

'Uatogi. Ribbed club. This is a carved 'uatogi made of toa (ironwood). The 'uatogi is a dark brown colour with a smooth polished surface. The handle of this 'uatogi is cylindrical in shape. At the base of the handle is a triangular protrusion drilled with a small suspension hole. The handle is lined with a few cracks. The handle is also wrapped in nine individual strands of 'afa (sennit). The 'afa serves to strengthen the handle and double as a unique decorative feature. The handle then flares to a wide, flat, four-sided blade with a diamond cross-section. The blade is adorned with four bands made of individual ribs. From the intersection of the handle there is a band made of two ribs. As the bands move up the blade the number of individual ribs increases by two. It is interesting to note that the blade is half the size of the handle. 'Uatogi were a type of 'au'upega (weapon of war) recognised for it's ribbed blade. The ribs were added to the blade not only to strengthen it but to make it much more lethal.
