Te kaneati

human history

Te kaneati. Fish hook of mother of pearl. This is a composite trolling hook made from te bwaeo (mother of pearl shell), te rii (bone) and te ira n atu (human hair) and te nimwaerere (cordage of human hair and coconut sennit fibres). A large shank has been cut from the hinge part of te bwaeo. It is long and bulbous in form. The depth of the shell's hinge can be seen from one end of te rabatan te matau (shank). It is off-white in colour with some transparency and shimmer. Te rabatan te matau concaves towards the point component. The top part of te rabatan te matau has been tapered into a short point and shows where a small perforation has been drilled through its depth. This is for the purpose of inserting te ao (line). The opposite end has been lashed with te nimwaerere (cordage of human hair and coconut sennit fibres) to contain both the hackle of te ira n atu and tabon te matau (point) components. Tabon te matau has been formed from te rii to portray a curved and pointed form. It is off-white in colour with some hafted markings across the surface.
