Te kai kibekibe

human history

Te kai kibekibe. Spade. This is a spade. It is composed of three different materials: te kora (coconut sennit fibre) for the cordage, a carved turtle bone for the blade of the spade and a long cylindrical handle made from light coloured uri (Beach gardenia; Guettarda speciosa). The square shaped blade is concave and features a node that extends from the centre. This part has been lashed with the te kora to the end of the handle. The blade has been cut from the breastplate of the turtle. It is off-white in colour with some grey tones across the surface. The filed areas of the blade reveal the porous material structure of the bone. A centre furrow runs through the centre of the blade adjacent to where the handle meets. This is was used for tilling gardens.
