Te kumete

human history

Te kumete. This is a carved wooden bowl. It has been made from itai wood (Calophyllum inophyllum). It has an oval rim and is low in height with a complete concaved exterior. Two nodes, one of a cubed form with a furrow to one side and one that features a centred furrow have been carved out on opposite ends of the rim. A large crack draws down from the node that presents a furrow to the side; a sloped one runs from the side of the rim and a small one is visible to the side of the node with the centre furrow. There is a cut, depressed surface layer near the large crack next to one of the nodes. In addition to this are small nicks amongst the interior of the bowl. The surfaces of the kumete have been smoothed and its colour ranges from mid to dark brown.
