    Tsuba and bag.

    Squared steel disc with rounded corners. Design of cricket-type insect in lower right hand corner with foliage in gold and silver raised inlay. Moon peeping from clouds in top left corner. Reverse shows river with gold detailing. Rectangular handsewn bag with red self-floral silk, large border of multi-coloured silk. Red cotton lining.

    Tsuba (sword guards) were used to protect the sword wielder's hands from sliding onto the blade. They are usually finely decorated, incorporating traditional motifs and designs and made from a variety of metals, such as iron, steel, brass or shakudo - an alloy of copper and gold.
