  • Description

    Placemat. Rectangular in shape. Woven from rauara (pandanus) with dyed apuraka (giant swamp taro) overlaid akamanea (decoration). Hatu commencement (the arrangement of the connected butt ends in a continuous row for the full width of the mat). Woven out in check. Paretumu mat (term used to describe fine mats with a decorative band around each border). The borders consist of diagonally positioned, alternating dyed-black and dyed-red overlaid strips of apuraka.

    Taviri (where cut-off wefts are twisted under surface of mat for concealment) finish around edges of mat. Viti motif (pattern of vertical lines of check) is placed in the centre of the decorative borders.
