  • Description

Paletua. Fish stunning club. This is a handmade paletua made of wood. This paletua is cylindrical in shape with a wide rounded knob at the head. The wood is unpolished with a rough surface. The paletua is a natural beige colour with spots of dark brown from the knots in the wood. The knob is also cracked in several areas, an indication of its use. Along the handle is the word PALETUA written in pencil.

The paletua was used to strike a malie (shark) during tiuga malie (shark hunting). Bait in the form of fish or pork as well as the blood of the bait was poured into the sea when a malie was spotted. This would lure the malie to the va'a (canoe). The tautai (fisherman) would catch the malie using a maea sele malie (shark lasso) and strike at the malie using the paletua.
