Uka

human history
  • Other Name

    Fishing line (English)

  • Description

Uka. Fishing line. This is an uka made of kafa (coconut sennit). This uka is a light brown colour with a fibrous texture. The kafa used to make this uka is made of pulu (coconut husk) The pulu has been gathered and mili (rolled) against the thigh to create long strands. The strands have then been braided using a fili lautolu (three-ply braid) technique. The uka has been knotted at each end to prevent it from unravelling.

The uka is then coiled in one big bundle and wrapped around itself to keep it together. Uka would have been used for fishing as well as lashing vaka (canoe) together.
