Kato tia hui moa

human history
  • Other Name

    Coiled basket with handle (English)

  • Description

Kato tia hui moa. Coiled basket with handle. This is a handwoven kato. It consists of a flat rectangular base made from a mid brown coloured wood. Perforations have been drilled through its depth along the sides for the purpose of threading pinnules of lau fā (pandanus leaf). A coiled structure made from kāniu (coconut midrib) makes up the framework of the round sides of the kato.

A vertical knotting technique known as tia has been applied to the coiled structure encasing the kāniu structure with lau fā. A decorative triangular pattern is defined by dark brown and light brown dyed pinnules of lau fā. Two large hui moa (handles) have been covered with a plain woven encasement of dark brown dyed and naturally pale yellow lau fā. They have been joined through the woven encasement at the centres of their arch over the opening of the kato. Their ends extend to the base of the kato and to which additional naturally pale yellow pinnules of lau fā have been applied and used to join and weave into the sides of the kato. The depth of the kato is shorter than the diametre of the circular rim.
