  • Description

    Kete. Bag. For carrying personal items. Rectangular and box-like in shape. Two layers of weaving to create the body of the kete; flat wide rauara (pandanus leaf) strips used to create the foundation layer and finer split strips of dyed-red apuraka (stalk of the giant swamp taro) colour is overlaid for creating checkwork and other patterning. Rim is rectangular with an overhanging inner edge.

    Kete is sewn at the overhanging rim to secure the overlaid red apuraka to the side of bag, also to fasten the tatai (handle) to the rim of the kete, transverse. Single tatai with a body of rauara with overlaid red and natural apuraka akamanea (decoration) in checker and lozenge motifs running continuously over the tatai (handle). Each side of the rectangular kete has a central motif of a lozenge or taimana (diamond) set against the checkerwork background.
