Pulou

human history
  • Other Name

    Hat (English)

  • Description

Pulou. Hat. This is a woven pulou made from fenū (young coconut leaf), fala (pandanus) and fau (hibiscus). The pulou is a beige colour with a grooved surface. The fua (crown) of the pulou is dome shaped, suggesting that it was made for a female. The fale (brim) is a wide circle. Where the fale and the fua meet sets a decorative band of woven rosettes. The rosettes are made of fala and orange dyed fau. Surrounding the rosettes are strips of green dyed fau.

Four wooden beads, painted black, are woven into the centre of the orange rosettes. The band is secured to the fua using yellow raffia. This pulou would have been created for the tourist market as a collectible item
