  • Public Access Text

A treasured and now rare item, this necklace is strung with finely worked coconut shell discs interspersed at intervals with ten porpoise teeth, and with an attached Conus shell disc pendant, nikabono. Necklaces of this type are usually worn by women and girls, and only very occasionally by men, during dance performances or other festive occasions.

Porpoise were of special significance to the chiefly, as it was believed that one’s chiefly status should be reflected in one’s physical size, so that a chief should be ‘round in the middle, like a porpoise’.
