Te Kakano

documentary heritage
  • Other Name

    Te Whanake 1 (Series)

  • Description

Te Kakano is the first text of the "Te Whanake" series and is designed as a beginning-level text for adults and secondary learners of MΣori.

Developed from material used and tested at the University of Waikato, Te Kakano is intended to provide the basis of an active, communicative classroom approach. It is therefore not a self-tutor, but rather should accompany classroom activities designed to develop learner's communicative competence: using skills and stragegies to cope with spoken and written MΣori in everyday situations.

Each lesson presents new language via a dialogue, supplemented by notes on function and usage. These are followed by exercises which extend to include vocabulary, pronunciation, listening, reading, and writing activiteis. These exercises can easily be expanded by the teacher in freer activities to help students relate the new language to its communicative function in real situations.--back cover
