Subject Notes
George Henry Dixon was born in Huddersfield, Yorkshire, in 1860. He came to New Zealand when he was 19 [ca. 1879] and for most of his life he was associated with the management of newspapers - The New Zealand Observer, at Auckland; The New Zealand Free Lance, at Wellington - before becoming the manager of the New Zealand Times, at Wellington, in 1913.
He married Emma Streeter in 1888. Emma was born in Auckland about 1869. She was prominent in women's affairs both in Wellington and Auckland and was particularly active in the free kindergarten movement.
George Henry Dixon was manager of the first New Zealand rugby team to tour Great Britain in 1905-1906. He wrote a book on the tour in 1906 which was based on his tour diary, 'The triumphant tour of the New Zealand footballers' [Reserve GV945 DIX]
