2/154 Sergeant Frederick ('Fred') Soar, 1NZEF, travelled from Wellington, New Zealand, to Cairo, Egypt, aboard the troopship 'Limerick', where he spent four months training. He served on the Western Front from 1916 to 1918 and was at Passchendaele (France) in October 1917. Soar was appointed Captain prior to the end of the war and returned to New Zealand in February 1919 (from the Forward to "Diary of a soldier", by Jenny Carter). He left the army with the final rank of Lieutenant-Colonel. Soar and his wife Edna started Soar Printers in Onehunga, Auckland, in 1920. Their granddaughter, Jenny Carter, is the third generation Soar to co-run the family business.
