    Primarily photographs of the 1910 expedition from the collection of Sir Joseph James Kinsey. Photographs relating to the British Antarctic 'Terra Nova' Expedition. Photographs given to Kinsey of the British Antarctic Expedition, 1910-1912; departure of the 'Discovery', 1901; Kinsey family; and New Zealand scenic.

    Copy of 'The Weekly Press' 19 February 1913, with pictorial supplement, reporting the death of Scott.

    Unused rail tickets, Lyttelton to Christchurch, issued on 23 March 1912. The tickets are for those who died on the expedition (including Scott, Oates, Wilson, Bowers and Evans) and those trapped for a further winter.

    Ford's correspondence includes letters (1905) from Scott, Cyril Longhurst, Clements Markham, Charles Royds and Ernest Shackleton.

    Provenance: The provenance of this collection is not clear. Donated by Sir Edmund Hillary in 1962, it consists primarly of a scrapbook of photographs, ephemera and correspondence compiled by Sir Joseph Kinsey, However, there are a number of letters addressed to Charles Ford, mostly for 1905, but one as late as 1959.

  • Subject Notes
    Joseph Kinsey was the Christchurch agent for Scott's expeditions. Charles Ford was bookkeeper and storekeeper for Scott on the National Antarctic Expedition, 1901-1904. Later, as an architect in partnership with Gummer, he was responsible for major buildings such as the Civic Theatre, Dominion Museum, Auckland Railway station and Remuera library.
