Subject Notes
Emily Hill was born at Lye, Worcestershire, England in 1847. She trained as a school teacher at the St Mary’s training college, Cheltenham, where she met her husband Henry Thomas Hill. In 1873, they immigrated to Christchurch, New Zealand, aboard the Merope. In New Zealand, Emily Hill worked as a teacher until 1878 when the family relocated to Napier and she engaged herself in an active public life. As a leading temperance worker and suffragist, Emily Hill took a firm interest in educational matters, especially the domestic education of young women and women’s right to participate fully in politics.
