Subject Notes
Albert James Newton was born in 1889. He travelled to Gallipoli with the Main Body but was evacuated with a facial injury on the first day of the landing. He later returned to Gallipoli and was eventually evacuated on 14 December 1915. He was later stationed at Armentieres, France. He was killed in action 27 September 1916 at Somme.
Ernest William Newton was born in 1887. He volunteered for military service in May 1915, sailed as a member of 'D' Company with the 8th Reinforcements, in November, 1915, and was drafted to 1st Battalion, Otago Infantry Regiment, in Egypt. He was sent to France in April, 1916, and served along with his brother Albert, who was killed on 27 September 1916 at the first battle of the Somme. Ernest Newton later buried his brother Albert's body on the battlefield, after having first gained permission to search for it.
