    Contains photocopied material. Typescript volume (35.5 cm) containing information on Gavin Brash and Elizabeth Shanks and their descendants. In roughly chronological order, the notes have been compiled from a variety of primary and secondary sources: birth, death and marriage records, newspaper articles, family papers, correspondence from other family researchers, as well as published material.

    Also included are several typed extracts (12 September - 4 October 1862) taken from a shipboard account of the journey by a young male member [William or Nicholas] of the Hunt family, who were fellow passengers of the Shanks family aboard the 'Cairngorm'. (25 leaves)

    On September 10th, 1862, Gavin Brash Shanks and his wife Elizabeth (nee Leckie) along with their two children, set sail from London, England, aboard the 'Cairngorm', arriving at the port of Auckland, New Zealand, on 7 January 1863. They settled at Kaukapakapa, where Gavin Shanks took up farming. He and Elizabeth remained there until their deaths in the early 1900s.
