Subject Notes
Ray Shannon was born on 1 July 1917, at Ngaruawahia. He obtained a science degree at Victoria University College and served as an engineer in the Post and Telegraph Department for most of his working life, apart from service in the Air Force from 1942 to 1945. He served in the Solomon Islands, where his interest in butterflies developed. This became a life-long passion, amassing 500 trays of displayed butterflies and moths and many hundreds of publications on these from around the world. Shannon died in 2008, at Tauranga.
