"Large sculpture by Marte Szirmay was unveiled on the southern end of the Newmarket Domain at end of 1969 to commemorate the centenary of Newmarket highway district. Sculpture was financed by Gilbey (NZ) LTD's Smirnoff Award which had been won by the sculptor Marte Szirmay. The owl with the rolling eyes was one of Newmarket's neon icons. Designed by Harry Rouse, Head Designer of Claude Neon NZ LTD Lumsden Green Newmarket."
