Avondale Lunatic Asylum ca. 1895. Also known as the Whau Lunatic Asylum (ca.1867); Auckland Lunatic Asylum/Auckland Provincial Lunatic Asylum (from 1851-1878); Avondale Mental Hospital (from 1905-); Oakley Hospital (to 1973) and Carrington Hospital. Currently the buildings used for Unitec Institute of Technology. Changes in name and function were due to The Mental Defectives Act 1911 and the amendment in 1928.
