Using the Library

Caring for our collections

The Museum Library is open to all who need access to its collections and services. The following rules will help us prolong the life of the materials in the Library'’s collections.

  • All materials must be used within the Reading Room or Special Collections Room of the library.
  • Do not bring anything into the library that is likely to damage the collections. Smoking, eating and drinking are not permitted.
  • Place all bags, coats and personal belongings in a locker at the entrance to the Library.
  • All readers using original materials are required to fill in a Reader Registration form.

  • Handle all library materials with care.  Please clean your hands before handling materials.  Do not lean on, fold, or mark library materials in any way, for example, by taking notes on top of a book, licking fingers to turn pages, stack open volumes on top of each other or turn them face down on the desk.
  • Pencils only are to be used for taking notes.
  • The Library Manager has final discretion on the availability of fragile and restricted materials and alternatives may be issued where appropriate.

Copying/permission to use

  • Photocopying of original materials is handled by Library staff.  Other copying options may be offered for some formats including original paintings, drawings, prints, albums, foldouts in books, large flat sheet items (including maps), newspapers and other large volumes.
  • Other restrictions on copying which may apply include: the physical condition of the item, its availability elsewhere, the quantity requested, and the requirements of donors or copyright holders.
  • All copying must comply with the Copyright Act 1994, and is generally provided for private study or research only. Permission and additional charges may apply for reproduction rights.
  • Permission from the Library Manager is required to photograph library materials.
  • Written permission to publish material from the Museum Library'’s collections may be required.
  • Any supplementary notes issued by the library are to be regarded as part of these rules.
