Te Ao Pasifika: Fangufangu Listen to the melodies produced by our objects. In this programme students explore the world of Pacific music instruments. We trace the origins, stories, legends and diaspora of musical thought across the Pacific. Students will handle, play and listen to stories about some of the selected objects. Lessons will focus on the fangufangu and its mournful and hypnotic sound – an experience that’s not to be missed. Fangufangu is the Tongan word for the nose flutes. Often made from bamboo they are beautifully crafted musical instruments. Historically, fangufangu were used to awaken the Tongan royalty from their sleep.
