Te Ao Pasifika: The Shark Caller
In this session students explore some of the traditional tools and implements used for fishing. Some of the implements are fascinating like the pearl shell lure while others are quite bizarre. The shark caller or rattle is one of those stranger instruments. Students will hear stories, handle objects and learn about the materials used in various instruments and how those instruments function.
The shark caller or rattle is a round loop made from tree vine where half coconut shells are pierced and attached to loop. For centuries people in the Pacific have practiced shark calling - beckoning sharks close with a special rattle and then yanking them in their outrigger canoes.
