Two Writers Research grants are now open for applications for writers working on a project that can utilise the considerable facilities and resources of the Auckland Museum Library as part of the manuscript’s development. These grants are offered by the Auckland Museum and NZ Society of Authors and can be used for fiction and non-fiction projects.

The NZSA / Auckland Museum Research Grants 2017 grants comprise:

  • One National Grant of $4,000 supplemented by the option of 4 weeks funded accommodation at the Michael King Writers’ Centre in Devonport.
  • One Auckland Regional Grant of $2,500 for writers from the Auckland region.

The Auckland Museum Library provides a reading room and copying facilities for grant recipients as well as guided access to the library’s collections of manuscripts, pictures and publications. Both recipients will receive a one year membership to the Auckland Museum Institute, benefits of which include access to the Members’ Lounge.

In 2016 the recipient of the National Research Grant was Laurence Fearnley – who used the award for research on smell and landscape, drawing on the journals of naturalist and missionary Rev. Richard Taylor and the observations he made regarding scented plant material used by Māori in the creation of "The Grand Māori Perfume.”

The Auckland Regional grant winner Jenny Clay utilised the grant for researching three families: the Owens, Edgers, and Daldys, and their influence on women’s suffrage in Auckland.

The Auckland Museum Library is one of New Zealand’s major research libraries” confirms Michaela O’Donovan, Head of Information, Library and Enquiries. “The depth of material available is highly valued both in New Zealand and internationally.”

The deadline for applications is 4pm, 27 October 2017.

Applicants for both grants need to be members of the NZ Society of Authors (PEN NZ Inc). Membership of the NZ Society of Authors is open to all budding and established writers. You can find out more at www.authors.org.nz.
