Sonic Museum — The Musicians
Musicians Tiki Taane, Don McGlashan, Nathan Haines and composer Chris Adams have backgrounds in the diverse genres of reggae, jazz, pop and classical composition. While also incorporating some ‘found sounds’ and experimenting with some non-traditional elements they use rhythm, harmony, melody and tone as the starting points for their compositions.
Tiki Taane
Maori Court , Kaitiaki Track 1
Tiki Taane is a former Salmonella Dub turned hit solo artist who now incorporates dub, dance, pop, and traditional Maori instruments into his sound. Tiki Taane’s composition takes the listener on a journey amongst the taonga of the Maori galleries, as well as a journey through time.

Don McGlashan
Origins gallery , World Unwitnessed: Aotearoa Before Humans Track 3
Don McGlashan is the writer of some of New Zealand's best known songs, including Don't Fight it Marsha , It's Bigger Than Both Of Us, Anchor Me, and Bathe In the River . Recently composed the score to Toa Fraser's film Dean Spanley . Don McGlashan remembers childhood trips to the beach where his father, a civil engineer with a lifelong interest in geology, would pick up stones and point out the seams and cracks, telltale signs of huge, violent forces.

Nathan Haines
Oceans gallery , Beneath the Waves Track 5
As a jazz musician, Nathan Haines has crossed over into many realms of music, from drum'n'bass and house to most recently recording an album with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. Throughout the 10 years Nathan Haines lived in London, the first thing he would do on his annual trip home to Auckland was take a swim in the sea. It became a kind of ritual reconnection with the Pacific.

Chris Adams
WWI Sanctuary, Echoed Memories Track 8
Chris Adams is a promising classical composer whose work includes a piece for four clarinets called The Liberation of Mr Norris . The dignity of the War Memorial space, the sense of light which streams through the skylight and windows, contrasting with the sombre nature of the lists of names that surround you, all suggested to Chris Adams an orchestral piece.

Sonic Museum — The Sound Artists
Sound artists Tim Coster, Richard Francis, Rachel Shearer, Phil Dadson and Rosy Parlane come from a background in which composition begins with the gathering of sounds from a wide variety of sources, including ‘found sounds’ from the natural and human environment. These sounds are then manipulated, blended and juxtaposed to create pieces of a layered and textural nature.
Tim Coster
Landmarks International Design & Decorative Arts , Very Old Sequins Track 2
Tim Coster is a sound artist who uses field recordings and other found musical sounds to create audio releases, installations and performances. Walking through the Landmarks gallery, Tim Coster thought about the different materials represented in the collection – earthenware, wood, glass, plastic – and how he might represent these in sound.

Richard Francis is an experimental composer and improviser whose work explores different techniques of sound generation focusing on field and environmental recordings. Richard Francis started with the idea of creating a piece that would trace a journey from one end of the Land Gallery to the other – from the mountains, through forests, to the wetlands.

Rachel Shearer

While in all-girl avant-goth-rock group Queen Meanie Puss in the 90s Rachel Shearer released an album on Flying Nun but now creates musical experiments, sound installations, and composes for film. In a reversal of Jules Verne’s classic imaginary voyage, Rachel Shearer is taking us on a journey from the centre of the Earth . Inspired by the Volcanoes Gallery, she takes us from the hot molten inner core, through the outer core, to the Earth’s mantle.

Phil Dadson

Phil Dadson is an experimental composer and artist producing sound-based artworks that take the form of performances, videos, and installations. An interest in antiquity, archaeology and stone tool culture led Phil Dadson to the Ancient Worlds gallery. But he was also attracted by this small gallery’s quiet and meditative atmosphere.

Rosy Parlane
WWII Hall of Memories , Dawn Track 9
Rosy Parlane is an electronic musician whose soundscapes are made up of guitars, piano, samples and field recordings. Check out albums Iris and Jessamine . He recently performed at London's Queen Elizabeth Hall as part of the Ether Festival 2009. Rosy Parlane found himself drawn to the bugle call of ‘The Last Post’ when composing his piece for the World War II memorial.
