Checklist of the Birds of New Zealand
The Checklist of the Birds of New Zealand, a new scholarly listing of New Zealand birds has just been produced by the Checklist Committee of the Ornithological Society. The checklist committee was chaired by Brian Gill, Auckland Museum’s curator of birds, and has spent nine years on the project. The new checklist provides an up-to-date listing of the 435 species of birds of the New Zealand region, including Norfolk and Macquarie Islands, and the Ross Dependency (Antarctica), and is a primary reference for their nomenclature, taxonomy, classification, status and distribution (current, historical and fossil).
Checklist of the Birds of New Zealand was launched at the Ornithological Society’s conference in Nelson at Queen’s Birthday weekend. At 500 pages the book is twice as long as the last edition published in 1990. The book was published by Te Papa Press. The checklist can be ordered from the Auckland Museum Shop.
