May 2012 LATE: The Seven Deadly Sins

Panellist and Artist profiles

Envy

THURS 3 MAY 2012

Smart Talk

“We are on a precipice” said Sir Lloyd, “but we have the tools, and the growing desire to stop ourselves tripping into oblivion. It sounds tough, and it is, but in a world full of malignant envy, our challenge is to rise above.”

LATE at the Museum’s season of sin launched riotously to a full house with 500 guests enjoying a panel discussion that moved from humorous observations to sobering truths about envy. Audience interaction was rife with questions, responses and confessions interrupting the proceedings.

Panellists Sir Lloyd Geering, Denise L’Estrange Corbet and Reuben Paterson discussed envy with moderator Wallace Chapman, making the distinction between benign envy, similar to admiration, and it’s ugly sibling, malignant envy which wants what it doesn’t have even at the expense of other’s wants and needs.

Shakespeare

Adding another dimension to the evening an Othello vignette was performed, providing another take on envy and its cost. And of all the Shakespearean plays, the passion of envy permeates Othello like no other. The audience watched helplessly as envy and jealousy took their toll and the characters twisted and spiralled out of control. In the end Envy was the only winner.

Great Music

The Bellbirds gave the crowd a masterclass in musicianship with their incredible songs and vocals, blending beautifully in the Grand Foyer that was lit in envious green.

Objects of Envy Trail & Confessional Booth

What museum objects inspire or are inspired by envy? Perhaps the special MacKelvie Diamond? Guests enjoyed wandering through the Museum in night mode following the object trail through the galleries to find out. The LATE confessional booth enabled everyone to get their sins of envy off their chests by confessing all to friends or strangers.

Smart Talk

Wrath, greed, sloth, pride, lust, envy and gluttony – in 2012 the LATE at the Museum series explores the seven deadly sins, how they play out in modern life, whether they still belong on the list and the social, economic and environmental repercussions of these base human tendencies. In 2012 are our “sins” more grievous, more extreme than they once were – or are they just better publicised?

Technology has moved on while human tendencies remain – is the evolution of new technology one of the enablers for sin?
