Coastal

First Floor

The Coastal Gallery features life-sized replicas of the sea shore and inter-tidal zone around New Zealand´s coastline.  Environments range from mangrove swamps to the rocky coastline at Piha. Though familiar to most Aucklanders, it is a world of remarkable diversity in physical form and animal life. A feature of the display is the living rock pool.

Recreations of the foreshore of Pakiri Beach and the mangrove estuary at Waiwera, north of Auckland, form major parts of the exhibition. Visitors can also walk across a living rock pool built into the gallery floor, to see the starfish, crustaceans to see the starfish and crustaceans that can be found along the country’s coastlinethat inhabit the country´s coastline.

After the rock pool, the gallery leads visitors into a truly magical sea display, where models of giant sharks and marlin and projected images and sounds of other fish life, create a living ocean experience.

The Coastal Gallery examines the margins where land and ocean meet around Auckland. A sandy beach, rocky foreshores and mangrove estuaries show slices of marine-animal life and flora.
