The Armoury

The Armoury, the Museum's military history information centre, provides a rich resource for the study of New Zealand’s military history.

When you visit The Armoury, which is on the top floor of the Museum, you can ask us any questions and conduct in-depth research about the role played by New Zealand in war and peacekeeping operations. RSA volunteers may also be on hand to share their experiences and to assist you with your research.

Visitors to The Armoury can use:

Books

Magazines

Maps and posters

Clipping files

Newspapers and Nominal Rolls on microfilm

  • The Museum Library catalogue for further related material. The Library is nearby and open Monday

The Armoury also provides information for those who want to study more about:

The Holocaust. The Holocaust Gallery is located near The Armoury.

The Museum Library also welcomes donations of archival material relating to New Zealand service personnel and military organisations.

Cenotaph Database

One of our major electronic resources is the Cenotaph database, which contains records and some photos for over 114,000 New Zealanders who gave their lives as a result of war, from South Africa in the 19th century, through the First and Second World Wars to Korea, Malaya and Vietnam in the 1950s to 1970s, and even recent peacekeeping deployments.

For many, this is can be an emotional experience - as it is often the first time they have ever found any information on their relative, let alone seen a photograph of them.

The Cenotaph database is an ongoing project. We welcome information, documents and photographs about New Zealanders in a War, this may be service in New Zealand or overseas. We are happy to copy materials, especially photographs and return the originals afterwards.
