Goodbye Kitty

Listen to my story

This was the very last feral cat to be killed by the Department of Conservation on Little Barrier Island, paving the way for it to become one of the world’s foremost wildlife reservations, and home to some of the world’s rarest species such as the Takahe and Kakapo. This cat is certainly no great feat of modern taxidermy, with its odd, squinty eyes. In fact, it’s a pretty ratty looking thing - one of those ruddy coloured tabbies that seem to be the norm among feral felines. However, this cat represents a turning point in wild life conservation, not just in NZ, but globally! See the Department of Conservation website www.doc.govt.nz for further details on conservation programmes in New Zealand.
