A T.rex Named Sue

Auckland got it's chance to see the largest, most complete and best preserved Tyrannosaurus Rex ever discovered during the  A T. rex Named Sue exhibition at Auckland Museum.

Sue, the world’s most celebrated dinosaur fossil, came to New Zealand from The Field Museum in Chicago. The dramatic, full-sized cast of Sue’s 12.8 metre long and 3.6 metres high skeleton formed the centrepiece of this exhibition, which also included interactive and tactile displays exploring the palaeontology that has helped scientists reconstruct Sue’s life and legacy.

Sue is remarkable because of the size and exquisite preservation of the bones. Sixty-seven million years after the dinosaur’s death, it is still possible to see fine details where muscles and tendons attached to the bone. The fossil has been described as the most significant historical gem ever unearthed.

A T. rex Named Sue also investigated evidence suggesting the presence of large dinosaurs in New Zealand similar to the T. rex. Museum staff designed a ‘Fossil Footsteps’ trail giving visitors the opportunity to embark on their own prehistoric exploration of New Zealand dinosaurs in the Museum’s Origins gallery.  More about Sue »
