The atrium consists of seven storeys and transformed the southern internal courtyard of the Museum. The atrium increased the Museum's footprint by 60 percent.
Visitors can enter the new atrium from either the vehicle underground car park, or what was the Museum's Administration entrance.
Walking underneath one of the four legs of the megaframe that support the suspended Fijian kauri clad bowl, visitors look up four storeys to the glass rimmed perimeter.
Included in the new atruim space are visitor amenities such as the Café and Museum Shop, and easy access to the Kai Room.
It is from this southern atrium that visitors can also access the permanent galleries either via Landmarks or the Encounter galleries.
