Lighting up the Museum for Te Wiki o te Reo Maori

MON 10 SEP - SUN 16 SEP, DUSK TO DAWN
LIGHTING UP THE MUSEUM

Tāmaki Paenga Hira Auckland War Memorial Museum will be lighting up red, white, and black with flashes of colours of the rākau (small coloured sticks) in celebration of Te Wiki o te Reo Māori.

The theme for Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori this year is “Kia Kaha Te Reo Māori!”  and the logo features the traditional hei tiki (greenstone pendant) in a modern treatment representing the continuity from the language of the tupuna (ancestors) to the language of today.

The use of colour in the arero (tongue) is an acknowledgement of Te Ataarangi and the colourful rākau – small coloured sticks - that have guided the teaching of te Reo Māori throughout the country since 1972 when Kāterina Mataira developed this teaching methodology. The many colours also represent diversity, the many peoples of Aotearoa.
