      MM. 25 October 1916: MM - 'On the night of 31st August, 1916, in the operations north west of POZIERES, Corporal FALKINER went out to lay a telephone line. Finding the usual route impassable owing to mud and damage caused by shell fire, he went out alone and laid the wire in the open, regardless of the heavy shelling from the enemy. He successfully accomplished his work and kept his Battalion in communication at a most critical time. This N.C.O. has done consistently excellent work since the landing at ANZAC on 25th April, 1915.' - 'Commonwealth Gazette' No. 62- 19/04/1917 | Bar to Military Medal - 'Is recommended for bravery, devotion to duty and skilful control of signal communications during operations near ZONNEBEKE on 26th September, 1917. Though wounded before the attack commenced, he remained on duty, supervising stations, helping to run lines and doing all within his power to assure smooth working. On duty without ret or respite during the whole tour, out at all times under the heaviest barrage, he was an example and an inspiration to all. Sergeant FALKINER was awarded the Military Medal for work at MOUQUET FARM on the 29th August, 1916.' - 'Commonwealth Gazette' No. 66- 02/05/1918 AWMM

    • George's second cousin was Major (and Professor) Lyndhurst Falkiner Giblin DSO MC .. whose father William Giblin was George's father's cousin, and also 13th Premier of Tasmania

      The relationship is that Charles' father Edward Falkiner was a younger brother of Marian Falkiner who married William Robert Giblin's father William Giblin ....

      Charles' mother Fanny Gale (George's grandmother) was a relative of Anthony Gale, 4th Commandant of the US Marines (Gale family from Carlow in Ireland)

      Georges' Mother was Moetu Taui, whangai of Pene Taui(II), 2nd Chair of the Te Kotahitanga Maori Parliament of the 1890's, and the daughter of Taui Kahi, son of Kahi of Ohaeawai. Pene Taui(II)'s father Pene Taui(I) was the native chief at Ohaeawae who defeated the British in July 1845 after developing his Pa with trenches and large Puriri logs faced with flax to withstand cannon fire (as recorded by the Rev Davis), and then led the main forces at Ruapekapeka (according to his obituary written by Pene Taui Mitai). Pene Taui (I) was the recorded (by Cowan) as being the last Ngapuhi "High Chief" and was a close relative of Te Pahi and Ruatara.
