    • 1921 - At the Nelson Cathedral last week the Bishop of Nelson unveiled a memorial brass tablet in memory of Lieut. Harold Kempthorne, Royal Field Artillery, who was killed at Ypres on 24th August, 1917. The service took the form of the Holy Communion, the unveiling, and a short address, by the.Bishop, who was the last among those present to see and converse with the deceased soldier before he crossed the channel to France. The late Lieut. Kempthorne, who was a son of Archdeacon and Mrs Kempthorne, of Brightwater, was an Old Boy of Nelson College. He joined the Eastern Extension Cable Company's service at Cable Bay (Wakapuaka) and for some time, was stationed at Cocos Island. He, however, retired from the service and commenced tanning in England. He joined up with the forces and for some time was on the Instruction Staff at Sling, but after strenuous efforts was sent to the front where with several others he was killed in a trench by the explosion of a German shell.
