  • One of the 50 Tuhoe soldiers who fought in WW1. Hamua. Pvt. World War 1, 1914-1918, sn.20059, Māori Contingent, embarked 22-Nov-1917 for Liverpool, England. Farmer, next of kin - Kimo Ereatara (father); b. 01-Jan-1895, dcd 1977 age 82Y (Charles Timutimu Research Project).

    Urewera Lands Consolidation Scheme (Report of Commissioners as to position of). Appendix to the Journals of the House of Representatives, 1924 Session I, G-07."At a sitting of the Commission at Ruatoki in April last it was stated that a number of the Urewera Natives sold their lands prior to enlisting for the war; those who returned now find themselves landless, and they ask that the Crown give them land so that they may not be a burden on the members of their families." Ereatara was listed as one of these men. AWMM

  • I will never forget you koro Tamahou. You were our neighbour in Taneatua for over 50 years. I was I2 years old when you passed. Most mornings you would sit out in the sun on your turu holding your tokotoko, enjoying the warmth. Your only language was Māori. My mother Waina would always talk to you in te reo and I know you so enjoyed her company. The war certainly had an impact upon you. Stories and memories of it that I as I child would never fully understand. I just want to say e koro Tamahou, thank you for giving your life for us. You will never be forgotten. Moe mai e koro moe mai. Arohanui mō ake tonu atu.
