    • GISBORNE, December 19. A man was drowned when attempting to ford the Mata river on horseback yesterday afternoon. He was Pani Campbell, aged 36, a shearer. Mr Campbell left Matahiia station about 5 o’clock yesterday afternoon to Makarika station. The journey entailed crossing the river. His riderless horse was found later, and a search party recovered his body from the river two miles downstream from the crossing.
