  • Listed on Nominal rolls with next of kin as Mrs Helen Penwell (mother), Kaiapoi, New Zealand.

Family informants note the information on the Nominal Rolls and CWGC is incorrect. His mother was Betsy Penwell of Kiapoi. There has been no "Helen Penwell" in our family but Franks brother's wife was Ellen Penwell of Waiau, Canterbury. Frank lived with them so, as stated in your database, Waiau was his enlistment address. The CWGC states Frank was in the Canterbury Mounted Rifles but that he was the: "Son of Henry and Betsy Penwell, of England." Both parents are buried in the methodist ceremony in Kiapoi, Canterbury. They were married in New Zealand and all their children were New Zealand born. Henry arrived in New Zealand in the 1860's. (family informant 2008)

Rank last held was listed as Temporary Corporal AWMM
