    • Married Marion Sigley (born c.1876 in the Motueka area) on 6 July 1904 in Masterton (Rev J Murray officiating).

When William enlisted in the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, Marion Winter's address in Pahiatua was Wakeman Street. After William's death, she moved to High Street, Masterton.

William and Marion had four children: Frederick William (b. 4 June c.1906 [1903 or 1906 on Particulars of Marriage in William's military record] in Masterton); Harold Joseph (b. 13 May 1908 in Masterton); Ruby May (b. 16 August 1910 in Masterton); and Helmiah Nyle Ronga (b. 21 February 1915 in Pahiatua). Helmiah was not born until after William had embarked, and he never saw his youngest daughter.

Served under Lieutenant Colonel William Malone at Gallipoli.

Reported missing in the Dardanelles on 8 August 1915.

William Winter died on Chunuk Bair during the August Offensive.

His wife, Marion Winter died 28 January 1953, aged 78 years. AWMM
